What Makes a Rain Jacket Waterproof, Not Just Water-Resistant

A waterproof jacket keeps rain from soaking through no matter how long you’re out in it; a water-resistant one only holds it off for a while before moisture works through the seams and fabric. The waterproof vs water resistant jacket question comes down to two things most shoppers never check: the fabric’s hydrostatic head rating and whether the seams are taped.

Hydrostatic head measures how much water pressure a fabric can withstand before it lets water through, expressed in millimeters. A jacket rated below about 5,000mm will handle light drizzle but wet through in a steady downpour. Most jackets marketed as genuinely waterproof sit at 10,000mm or higher, and technical outdoor shells often reach 20,000mm or more.

Waterproof vs Water Resistant Jacket Labels: What They Really Mean

Brands aren’t always precise with these words, so the rating number matters more than the marketing copy. “Water-resistant” or “water-repellent” on a tag usually signals a coated fabric with no taped seams, fine for a short walk between buildings but not a hike in steady rain. “Waterproof” should come with a specific hydrostatic head figure or a named membrane technology. If a listing doesn’t mention either, treat the claim as marketing rather than a spec.

Seam construction is the part most people skip entirely. Every seam is a row of needle holes, and even a fabric rated at 20,000mm will leak at an untaped seam. Waterproof jackets use heat-sealed tape over the stitching on the shoulders, hood, and side seams. Run a finger along the inside seams before buying; taped seams have a smooth, slightly raised strip, while untaped ones show bare stitching.

What the Durable Water Repellent Coating Does

Most waterproof shells also carry a durable water repellent (DWR) finish on the outer fabric. This is what makes rain bead up and roll off instead of soaking into the fibers. DWR isn’t what keeps you dry on its own, but without it the outer layer absorbs water, gets heavy, and stops breathing properly even if the membrane underneath is still doing its job. DWR wears off with wear and washing, which is why a jacket that used to bead water and now looks dark and soggy on the outside usually just needs to be washed with a technical cleaner and retreated, not replaced. Membrane makers like Gore-Tex publish care instructions specific to their fabric, worth checking before you toss a shell in a regular wash cycle.

Breathability is the trade-off worth understanding before you buy. A fully waterproof membrane blocks liquid water from getting in but also limits how much sweat vapor escapes, so for anything active, a jacket that keeps rain out can still leave you damp from sweat underneath. Zippers are the other weak point worth checking: look for a storm flap covering the zipper or a coated waterproof zipper with visible ridges on the tape, since an uncovered standard zipper is the fastest way water gets past an otherwise well-built shell.

If you’re shopping for a jacket to layer over insulation rather than wear alone, the same waterproofing logic applies to how a winter jacket’s insulation performs when it gets damp, and the seam and zipper checks are worth running through the same list used when buying a coat meant to last for years. A jacket that’s waterproof on paper but has three untaped seams and an open zipper isn’t going to keep you dry in practice, spec sheet aside.
